Game Journalism Day 5 Walk Through

In this game, you have to survive by collecting resources, making sure you have rest, and eat and drink water. I will be specifically talking about the challenge called "A Hope Rescue". In this challenge, you have to traverse from Trappers Cabin all the way to the top of TimberWolf mountain to get a flare gun and then traverse back down to the lighthouse and fire it. This is especially difficult as you don't know which way to go because the map you have is very vague. You could look up a map online but that's cheating. You just have to hope you're going in the right direction. You also have to keep track of your sleep, food, and water and hope not to die; which is very hard.

This is all I can write
I don't have any screenshots as I lost them all.

Game Journalism Day 3 - TACKLE

In this challenge you have 7 days to complete it.

I will show you how I made fishing tackle.
I started a new challenge as I didn't want to destroy my progress on my main challenge.

I started off by looting the starter area and then making my way to the Camp Office. I knew there was a lake right beside it meaning there's an ice fishing hit on it. So I made my way there and went inside.
I looked it up and you need scrap metal to craft a hook and then a cured gut to craft a line. I found a simple tools box and the harvested it to get some scrap metal. I used this to craft the hook.
Afterwards I thought I needed to kill an animal to get a fresh gut, then have to leave it on the ground indoors for 5 days for it to become a cured gut. But i found some line on the crafting bench. and I used this to craft the fishing tackle.

It was night time and there was a blizzard outside but I proceeded to go to the fishing hut. I couldn't see anything but eventually I found it.

I went and broke the ice in the fishing hole and then proceeded to fish for about 4 hours and caught some fish on the way.

I then went back to the Cabin and started cooking the fish that I caught.

Game Journalism Day 2 - SURVIVE

Today I explored the vast Canadian wilderness, scavenged for food and clothes and fought off a few wolves in the meantime.
So I started by traveling for a bit from the starter cabin and eventually, I reached a lakeside cabin.

Camp Office
I searched it for a bit and then ate and slept and then I was off again. After about 5 min I found a dam.
Carter Hydro Dam
I passed through it and completely scavenged the whole building. After I left the dam, I crossed a frozen river in a ravine and fought off a wolf. I managed to scare him away using a flare and then kept moving forward.

I eventually came across a cave and I went inside. I set up a fire inside, cooked and ate some food, and then slept for a few hours. The cave turned out to be pretty short and only took me a few minutes to get out. After I got out, I arrived at a new area of the map called "Pleasant Valley". I was getting closer to Timberwolf Mountain according to the map which means I'm on the right track. It was very cold outside right now. About -29 degrees. And I started developing hypothermia. I had to find some shelter soon so that I don't die from hypothermia. I traversed for about 10 minutes and found a place called "Draft Dodgers Cabin"
 Draft Dodgers Cabin
This small cabin practically saved my life as it was decently warm inside. (about 8 degrees) and I could get rid of my risk of hypothermia and rest. There wasn't a fireplace or anything but it was pretty warm inside so I didn't have to worry.
After I was decently recovered I went back outside and traveled more for a bit. By the looks of it on the map, pleasant valley is a very open area and Timberwolf Mountain is to the top-right of it. But the thing is, I don't know which way is top-right my only hope is to go in one direction and hope I'll eventually get there.
I thought of an idea. I assume that timberwolf mountain would be pretty big so if I went in the center of pleasant valley maybe I could see it since it would stand out to the other mountains. So that's what I did. I started walking towards the center of pleasant valley and eventually, I came across a massive cabin.
Pleasant Valley Farmstead

I went in there and looted it all. It had a lot of stuff. Enough to last probably a few days.
And that's pretty much where I left off.

Here are some more pics:
My current inventory with a lot of water

A random corpse I found on the ground

My survival tips for this challenge are to pretty much keep moving and never stay in one place too long. Because you'll eventually starve and you get hungry and thirsty VERY quickly.

Also, you can use the charcoal to sketch your map. Which is very useful if you don't know where you are.

Game Journalism Day 1 -BEGIN

The game we picked to play for the game journalism is "The Long Dark".
This game takes place in the Northern Canadian Wilderness and you are alone. You have to scavenge for food and materials to survive and to be wary of wild animals.

1) The challenge we chose was "Hopeless Survival". In this challenge you have to climb all the way to the top of the mountain, grab the flare gun, then travel all the way down to the lighthouse and fire it. But you only have 7 days to complete it.

2) Today I explored the area and tried to survive. I looted the starter cabin and got some food and a hunting knife. I started progressing and moving forward and eventually found a cabin and looted that as well.

3) WASD is to move, F is to open inventory, space opens up a hotbar where you can quickly select stuff. You interact with stuff by clicking on them

Day 19

Today I fixed the problem I was having last class with the hitbox.

All I had to do was make a "Draw End" event that made it so that whenever the drawing of the object finished, do this. So inside I made and instance_destroy code that destroys the hitbox whenever it finishes drawing.

So now it looks like this:
Now the next thing I have to do is make it so that the hitbox rotates with the player.
What I figured out worked was that I add a code in a "Draw Begin" event that said that its angle is equal to the mouse angle.

And now this is how it looks in the end

Today I learned how to make the hitbox disappear after a certain time and make it follow the angle of the sword.

Tomorrow I will try to implement damage to my hitbox.

Day 18

Today I worked on my attack hitbox in my game.

I started out with doing the same thing as yesterday and tried to make a red box sprite that's the same size as the animation. After this I started coding in the attack state because that's where everything will be happening.

I added this code that made it so that it would create the hitbox.

What this does is that it creates the hitbox object in between the second and fourth animations (because it starts counting at 0)

Heres how it looks so far

It just creates hitboxes everywhere.
I think I need to add a code to destory the hitbox after its done.

Unfortunately I ran out of time

Today I learned how to create an object during the animation.

Tomorrow I will continue work on the hitbox.
